Microexpressions -- 7 February 2021

Maybe someday I'll be able to tell a story
That doesn't have anything to do with me
Or you
But how can I ignore
Your mouth full of entitlements
And your face that shows all the grief
The narrative didn't have time for
I've rewritten our story a thousand times
Searching for the happy ending
You know that we deserved

Youthful -- 17 November 2019

I’ve made universes out of breadcrumbs
Written sonnets about half smiles and crow’s feet
Created sonatas from a faint distant laugh
But I’ll never be able to recreate how
I’ve only ever felt young when I’m with you

Oranges As Sappho Intended -- 25 September 2019

Between breaking the skin and
Peeling back the rind
We re-enact a new original sin
Flesh on my lips
Fingers soft and sticky
My skin hungers for yours
Will anything be as intimate
As your lips kissing my fingertips
While I feed you an orange?

Fools In Love -- 31 August 2016

People always say that love makes fools of us all, and looking at you I can finally understand why.

You make a total idiot of me.

You turn my tongue, so used to witticisms and clever retorts, to a stuttered, mushy mess that must be reflected on my face every time you speak. My heart tries to jump past my throat in an attempt to get to you, as if offering itself upon an altar at your feet.

So instead I keep my mouth closed.

I stare at you, a deer in the headlights, caught between freedom and a nightmare. Too afraid to say what I want, to paint you through elegant and fictionalized prose to immortalize you, to win you over. I’m acting like a child, and just want to lick you to claim you as mine.

But instead I keep my mouth closed.

You make a total idiot of me.

You make me love being burned. I live for the sharp, stinging pain in my hands, anything to hold onto the jagged metal edges you line yourself with. I wish my hands were bigger so I could hold all of you.

Do I love you, or is that the adrenaline talking?

Would you stay if I were to touch you with shaking hands, unsure like the legs of a newborn giraffe? Would I be enough in my own uncertainties? No matter how many times I try to tell the truth, it never seems to be enough, I’m never enough.

So instead of telling you all these things, I hide them away, and pray that someday I’ll have the courage to make a total idiot of myself and tell you: We are all fools in love, please forgive my foolishness.

Spun Sugar -- 1 August 2015

I can taste the distance in your kiss
And feel the discontent in your fingertips
Never thought love to be as fickle as the breeze
Seems like I have so much I don't know
You always said that I was spun sugar
Held together by questions and surgical tape
But before you always said it with a semblance of a smile
I was always afraid you'd leave me for something solid
Now I'm afraid you'll leave me for nothing at all

You Were Always Supposed To Be A Warning -- 2 May 2015

You were always supposed to be a warning
A wildfire can never hold the ocean
But you make me want to try

I was told that love can be so destructive
The kind of force that rots and levels cities
Leaving only deteriorated carcasses of what used to be

My mother brought me to several such cities
Places where she thought no hope could dwell
But I never heeded any advice she gave

I felt no dysphoria in these lonely, forgotten places
Any warnings from my mother have faded in my head
I was too busy archiving architecture and dreaming

You were always supposed to be a warning
There can be beauty to be found in the aftermath of chaos
Even if I'm the only one to see it

Astral Projection And Mutual Affection -- 24 March 2015

Constellations dance and decorate your body
From your hands to your face
And everywhere in between
You reflect galaxies in your eyes
Asteroids and comets orbit your path
You are the northern lights and the Milky Way
And the ever expanding universe
If you are all the stars then I am a black hole
Ever collapsing and self destructive
To the point of leaving nothing in my wake
I'll consume everything you are if given the chance
So stay awake, save yourself
We both know this is going to end with you broken and me empty

Paints - 26 October 2013

You stole the blank canvas that was me
Did me up with colors and tears
Then you tore that canvas into two
But I broke my own heart
Because I'd rather be broken
Then put the blame on you
